The private school interview is a critical part of the admissions process. It gives admissions teams the opportunity to get to know your child beyond their test scores and application. It’s also a chance for your child to make a strong, lasting impression.

At Henry Charles Consulting, we help students prepare for these important conversations with confidence and clarity. With the right support and preparation, your child can walk into their interview feeling ready to shine.

Common Private School Interview Questions

While every school has its own style, there are a few questions that tend to come up in most interviews. Some of the most common include:

  • What do you enjoy learning about and why?
  • How do you spend your time outside of school?
  • What is a challenge you’ve faced and how did you handle it?
  • What do you hope to find in a new school community?
  • How would your teachers describe you?

The key is to help students answer honestly while expressing their curiosity, character, and potential. Strong communication skills, self-awareness, and thoughtful responses go a long way.

Tips for a Successful Interview

  • Practice in a Comfortable Setting: Run through sample questions in a conversational way. Practicing aloud can help students organize their thoughts and feel more at ease.
  • Focus on Authenticity: Encourage your child to speak in their own voice. Admissions teams appreciate sincere, thoughtful answers over memorized scripts.
  • Highlight Strengths Through Stories: Sharing specific examples makes answers more memorable. Stories that demonstrate resilience, leadership, or curiosity can be especially powerful.
  • Prepare Thoughtful Questions: Students should bring one or two questions to ask at the end. This shows initiative and genuine interest in the school.
